  1. Math Lesson for Wiki
Teacher: Lindsey Hensley Date: March 7, 2011
    Objective
SW identify the range, mode, and median of a given set of data.
SW create a single and double bar graph from the given data on the wiki site http://lindseyhensley.wikispaces.com/.
SW interpret data to identify similarities and differences

Ten-Minute Warm up/Review TW have students take out their Math Madness workbooks and complete the 9th activity.
TW go over all 9 questions aloud, to review previously taught concepts, ranging from place value to multiplication and division concepts.

    Activities that Develop the objective

TW begin lesson by distributing post-it notes to students and having students record the number of letters they have in their first names.
SW come to the board and place their post it above the corresponding number on the white board. (this will look just like a line plot when complete)
TW then use the given data to review how to find the range (highest #-smallest #) mode (# that occurs the most) and median (# in middle when lined up from least to greatest).
With partners, SW find those three numbers using the posted data on the board. TW go over answers to check for understanding and to share helpful strategies/methods aloud.
TW then model how to take this data and create a bar graph using x and y axis data. (colors and numbers) TW record on white board, to remain posted for students to see.
Next, TW pull up the wiki site http://lindseyhensley.wikispaces.com/ where students were told to post their skittles data from yesterday.
Using the given data SW be asked to create a bar graph that displays how many of each color they had in their bags.
Next, SW select another person’s data to use as a comparison and create a double bar graph with the data.
SW be asked to write a paragraph about any similarities or differences they found between their own data and their partner’s.
If time allows, SW share their double bar graphs and write-ups aloud with class.
    Assessment

    Observation/discussion
    Math Madness #9
Completed single and double bar graphs with write ups detailing similarities and differences.

  2. Dr. Diggs,I simply cut and paste from my word document. I had a difficult time figuring out another way. The link for the wiki site that I developed is also included in this plan!

  3. The students are reviewing problem solving using the SOLVE method. Emphasis on the "line up the problem" step. With the idea that "there's more than one way to skin a cat" students will get on class wiki and post different ways they solved selected problems for homework.

  4. Students will be creating a wiki sight including the information that they have gathered during their animal research project in science. After my frist graders post, I would like the older students in the school to view the posts of the different animals and add to the information. It would be awesome to have a 1st/5th grade partnership to complete this assignment. The fifth graders would be responsible for expaning upon the information that my first graders already posted. The information posted would be grade-level appropriate and the students could learn from one another.

  5. Wiki Lesson: Animals

    Objective:
The students will research an animal to learn about their needs and how they survive. The students will compare the similarities and differences between humans and animals.

    Materials:
    Wiki site
    Books to research
    Access to internet

    Subjects covered:
    Science, Reading

    Procedures:
To begin our unit on animals, we will research one animal as a class. The teacher will explain the different classes of animals and how each is different. Using the wiki site, http://kristynw.wikispaces.com/, we will click on the first link to decide what animal we want to research as a class. From there, we will find books, magazines, and websites about that animal to conduct our research. Students can add favorite books and links to our wiki space for others to use, as well. We will create a class report all about the animal.
Eventually students will each conduct their own research on an animal of their choice, each learning about a different animal. Using our wiki space, they will first decide which animal to research. Once they have done their research they will start adding facts and links about their animal to our class wiki space. Once all animal reports have been added to the wiki, we will look at the different animals together. Students should recognize that animals have basic needs: air, water, shelter, food, space. We will also compare the needs of different animals and then compare animal needs to our own needs as humans.

    Assessment:
Each student will give a report about their animal. Students will work together to have discussions about their different animals to learn more from one another.

  6. I decided that a class wiki on the 5th grade weather unit would be a very interesting way to get my students involved in all the various aspects of weather the we cover in this eight week unit. The objective for the site would be to get the students to provide information, observations, and ideas about weather on an interactive wiki site for the unit. Throughout the eight week unit the students will post their weather observations and forecasts (based on what information to use). They can post on weather events from around the world, weather and science (the instruments and math used to forecast weather), and some weather history as well. I would like to post some videos for the students to view as well. I am excited because there the possibilities would be endless for this unit.

  7. The students will be creating a Wikispace based on a Math lesson on graphing the amount of pockets worn to school on a given day. Students will use the wikispace lisalevay.wikispaces.com to post thier findings and line plot information. Using the saved information on the wikispace, the students will create a class line plot.

  8. Due to my very limited wall space, I wanted to create a wiki to eliminate the need for the mandatory Concept/Question board in Imagine It! Students can continually post and add to our virtual concept question board. I can also post our weekly focus questions for students to blog and post comments about.

  9. My students will be exploring a unit on matter. We will be creating a KWL chart as a class as an introduction. The wiki includes pages for each state of matter, where students will find links to virtual experiments, videos, etc. Students will create a "Frequently Asked Questions" page where they will ask and respond to questions. They will also create a glossary of terms with illustrations and definitions.

  10. Vocabulary Wiki
Objective: Students will be familiar with, post and read definitions of words that will be used during instruction for the next week on the wiki.
Procedure: Teacher will determine which words are important to know for the subjects for the next week. Students will be assigned words to become experts in and post their definitions and use them in context. Students will be expected to read the definitions and then use them in context throughout the next week as they are used in instruction. Teacher will keep a checklist going of words that are mastered by students and words that need to be relooped into instruction.
Assessment: Teacher will mark who is using and understanding the vocabulary words for the week. Formative assessments for morning work or journaling will be scored to ensure that the vocabulary is mastered. Students will be expected to read and post words on the wiki each week.

  11. Being that my students are only four years old I would use the wiki as a way to communicate with the parents of the students in my classroom. The wiki can also be used as a tool to help keep the parents aware and involved with what is going on in our classroom as well as all expectations.

  12. Objective:
Students will learn how to solve various multiplication and division problems using multiple techniques and strategies. The students will use these strategies in solving problems and decide which they prefer and continue to use this strategy.
    Materials:
Wiki Site (intro to various techniques)
Math worksheet with various problems both word and computation
Access to internet and wiki from home or computer lab

    Subjects covered:

    Mathematics (grade 3-5)

    -Multiplication and Division

    Procedures:
Students will be asked to check out the wiki site 1-2 weeks prior to the actual lesson being taught in the classroom. Worksheets and activities will be assigned and sent home and collected prior to the lesson/unit being taught. Students/parents will be asked to spend time looking at the wiki site and trying to work through how to solve basic computation problems. Once the basic problems have been solved the questions will be more in depth. For instance, students will learn how to use the window method, lattice method and to build arrays to solve multiplication problems. Students will also learn how to use the ‘hangman’ method and repeated subtraction method.

This will be explained in depth and examples shown on the wiki. Students will be asked to solve problems using the various techniques shown.

  13. Students will create a wiki page to describe what they know about a math topic (for example: step by step instructions for adding fractions with unlike denominators). Students will be assigned math topics that will be heavily tested in fifth grade, and will present their information to the class. It will be used as a reteach method, but taught by students, in an effort to expose the students to the same information, but from a different perspective (other than mine).
